The New Beetle model was developed and implemented for production by the Volkswagen AG concern, as a supplement to the commercial offer of the Polo model, but also as an attempt to re-use the great popularity of the Beetle model, to which the new car clearly alluded in its style and name. VW New Beetle was developed on the VW Golf 4th generation platform, and engines from 1.4 to 2.3 liters were used as the drive, and even 3.2 liters in the sports version. The engines could work with an automatic or manual gearbox. The car turned out to be quite a successful design and in 1999 it won the North American Car of the Year title. It was replaced in the group's offer by the Beetle model.
